NEFT vs RTGS vs IMPS: Choosing the Right Transfer Mode

Prepared by the IFSC Search Editorial TeamPublished: 2026-08-10Last Reviewed: 2026-08-18

Quick Overview

India operates three primary interbank electronic funds transfer systems: NEFT (batch-settled, no minimum amount), RTGS (real-time gross settlement for high-value transfers of ₹2 Lakh and above), and IMPS (instant 24x7 payment up to ₹5 Lakh managed by NPCI). All three systems require the recipient's bank account number and a valid 11-character IFSC code.

1. National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT)

Operated directly by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), NEFT is a nationwide payment system that facilitates one-to-one electronic funds transfers. NEFT operates on a Deferred Net Settlement (DNS) basis, processing transactions in half-hourly batches continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (totaling 48 settlement batches every day).

Minimum Amount ₹1 (No Minimum Limit)
Maximum Amount No Statutory Ceiling (Subject to individual bank limit)
Settlement Speed Half-Hourly Batches

2. Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS)

RTGS is a specialist funds transfer mechanism designed for large-value institutional and personal transfers. Unlike NEFT, RTGS transactions are settled continuously on a transaction-by-transaction basis without batch netting. Once cleared by the RBI, RTGS transactions are irrevocable and final.

Minimum Amount ₹2,00,000 (Two Lakhs)
Maximum Amount No Upper Limit
Settlement Speed Instant / Real-Time

3. Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)

Managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), IMPS provides real-time, 24x7 interbank fund transfers accessible through mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs. The maximum transaction ceiling was updated by the RBI and NPCI to ₹5,00,000 (Five Lakhs) per transaction.

Minimum Amount ₹1
Maximum Amount ₹5,00,000 per Transaction
Settlement Speed Immediate (Within Seconds)

Practical Selection Scenarios

Scenario A: Sending ₹25,000 for Monthly Rent

Recommended: NEFT or IMPS. If the transfer is non-urgent, online NEFT is completely free of charge. If the recipient requires immediate confirmation on a holiday, IMPS delivers funds within seconds.

Scenario B: Sending ₹5,00,000 for Property Registration

Recommended: RTGS. Since the amount meets the ₹2 Lakh threshold, RTGS settles gross in real-time, providing an immediate Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) recognized across land registries and corporate accounts.

Important Verification Check

Before sending funds via NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS, verify that the beneficiary branch's 11-digit IFSC code is active and enabled for the specific payment service. You can lookup active branches using our IFSC Search Engine.
