What Is a Virtual Payment Address (VPA)?

Prepared by the IFSC Search Editorial TeamPublished: 2026-08-10Last Reviewed: 2026-08-18

Core Concept

A Virtual Payment Address (VPA), commonly referred to as a UPI ID, is a unique financial identifier that acts as an alias for your bank account. It allows you to receive and send money instantly across the UPI network without exposing your 16-digit account number, branch name, or IFSC code.

How a VPA Works

A VPA follows an email-like addressing syntax: [identifier]@[bank_handle]. When someone initiates a payment to your VPA, the NPCI central switch maps the alias against your registered bank account and routes the funds securely.

Critical Security Guidelines: Avoiding Common Scams

Golden Rule of UPI Transfers

You NEVER enter your UPI PIN to receive money.

Entering your 4-digit or 6-digit UPI PIN authorizes a DEBIT from your bank account. If an unknown buyer or caller asks you to enter your PIN to "accept a refund" or "receive a payment", it is a fraudulent collect request.

Pay vs Collect Requests

A "Pay" request sends money immediately. A "Collect" request asks for money from you. Always verify the transaction prompt before biometric or PIN entry.

QR Code Scam Awareness

Scanning a QR code on WhatsApp or marketplace listings only authorizes outward payments from your account. Receiving payments never requires scanning a QR code.
